Submission Guidelines

From 2007, The Stinging Fly will only accept submissions during the first three months of each year. Submissions will not be accepted/read outside of this period. March 31st is not the deadline, it's the cut-off point. Submissions will be read throughout the three month period.

* The Stinging Fly welcomes submissions from Irish and international writers. We are looking for writers who have something to say, and who have taken the time to say it well. We've a particular interest in promoting the short story form.

* The postal address for submissions is: The Stinging Fly, PO Box 6016, Dublin 8. We do not accept e-mail submissions.

* Always include a self-addressed envelope with sufficient postage for return or response. Contributors from abroad should enclose an international reply coupon (not foreign stamps - and Dublin is not in the UK anymore).

* We can respond to a submission via email, if an address is provided.

* We do not accept multiple submissions. No more than two stories and/or four poems should be submitted at any one time.

* Work by an individual author will only be considered once during the annual reading period. (Try again next year!)

* Short stories should not exceed 3000 words. This is a rough guide only; we do publish longer stories, but it is recommended that first-time submissions not exceed 3000 words (by too much).

* There is no restriction on the length of poems. (But don't get too carried away!) (Seriously, we are in a position to publish longer poems so welcome the opportunity.)

* The Stinging Fly also features book reviews. If you are interested in reviewing for the magazine, please email the editor, attaching a sample review.

* The Stinging Fly features colour artwork on the cover of each issue and black and white drawings/photographs inside the magazine. Submissions are welcome.

* It is recommended that people read at least one back issue of the magazine or the work featured on this site before submitting work. We do have standards, and reading the magazine should allow you to form an impression of what those are.

* All submissions are read. The editors' decision may not be correct but it is final.

* With a limited budget, we are only in a position to offer contributors a discretionary token payment. They will also receive two copies of the issue in which their work is featured and can order further copies at a discounted rate.

* Copyright remains in all cases with the author. Some work selected may be included in future versions of this web site.
