Preludes

We had come too early. Alone
we sat in the cathedral's silence,
you were thumbing your program
promising: 'J.S. Bach - Organ
Preludes'. Remember?
First week of our engagement,
your cotton dress
too thin for the cathedral's chill
and I placed my jacket
around your trembling shoulders.
I recall the tiled floor
soiled with confetti, a poster
on the notice board
for marriage guidance, and
a lone candle
on the lady altar
petering out.

Outside
the unexpected storm
rehearsing its fury.
